-Spineless Golden Saguaro Cactus is the latest ultra rare obsession for any in the know cacti collector. Some would go as far as awarding them holy grail status in the community.

-Originally from Guanajuato, Mexico where it grows in limestone canyons and up to 45ft tall! In captivity they typically remain much smaller. Nonetheless, they are still very impressive.

-Like cristata (crested), variegata (variegated) and monstrose, inermis (without spines) describes the resulting phenotype of a rare genetic mutation. Unbelievably enough, Inermis cacti have mutated to not produce spines. This is a highly coveted trait for collectors, horticulturalists and cacti lovers alike.

-N. polylopha Inermis prefer ample direct sunlight. At least five hours of direct sun daily is required. If growing indoors, a south facing window is best. If outdoors, place them in  a spot where they will get plenty of sun exposure. If you are growing this plant outdoors we recommend initally providing it with light shade during the peak afternoon sun hours.

-Has 10-30 narrow and chiseled ribs along its stem. Its epithet, polylopha, literally means “many ribs”.

-Like many other New world cacti, these guys are a nocturnal blooming species. In the spring to summer seasons they will bloom clusters of red, pink to magenta flowers along the crown of the plant. Their blooms will give way to small fruit that are indeed edible for people.

-For the soil make sure to use one with at least 50% inorganic material (pumice, perlite, etc.) Soil must be sharp and very well draining.

-In summertime, water them when the soil has completely dried out which will be semi-frequently if in ideal conditions (2-3 times a month) . In the winter, it is fine to withhold watering entirely. This will also encourage flowering during the spring.

-It is always better to err on the side of underwatering than overwatering if you are unsure if watering is needed.

-Not necessary to fertilize these plants but one dose of half normal dose diluted cacti-specific fertilizer is okay only during growing season.

-These guys bruise quite easily so please handle with care. Also be aware they may have small prior bruising abrasions here and there from growing outdoors.

-Non-toxic to humans or pets.

Thank you & happy planting!
